  • I finally gotten around to writing my review of this place. I worked in carlton place building a new royal home about 2 1/2 years ago. Gourmet Restaurant was right beside our motel. I think it was called barons motor inn or something? Kit, the proprieter of that place was very friendly and told us about the restaurant next door when we asked him where was good to eat. He also went over for us and brought us pizzas from the place. Which were always TOP NOTCH delicious pizza fresh ingredients and dont taste like every other pizza from the big name chain shops. He also bought us a case of beer one day thats how awesome he is. He told us that when we went over there to get food, tell them that Johnny sent us. lol. The service is second to none at the restaurant. (as well as at the baron motor inn) Food arrives fast and when it arrives you are blown away by the size of the portions for the price you pay. We ate there sometimes 2 or 3 times a day for the week we stayed there building the house. It was like going to your favorite relatives house for supper. The cooks were great guys too and take a lot of pride in their menu. and cooking. I took their photos when we were done work. I just saw it on my computer thats why I writed a review. Yes this place was so great I took photos of our last meal there. I've considered moving to carleton place because of the friendliness of them and Kit. It felt like being in that town in groundhog day or something lol. They open at like 6am so we hardly ever even bothered doing the breakfast over at the motel. We'd skip the regular continental breakfast of juice toast, muffins etc and we'd trudge right over through the snow, walk in (mind your step) and oder breakfast. it would arrive within 10 mins and wed be out of there in 20 minutes. I have never eaten at a better restaurant when you take price, portion size, and service into account. The place has a bit of a backwoods greasy spoon decor/feel to it. (lots of cedar benches, wall panelling, snowshoes on the wall and stuff) but thats not a bad thing in a place where you get awesome homecooked type food. The bathrooms are not very great I remember though usable and fairly clean from what I remember, they may present a bit of difficulty to persons in wheelchairs. (I thought I recalled some stairs up to the bathroom or inside it or something) Dont let that throw you off though. The staff is so friendly I bet they if there is still stairs involved in the bathroom (if there ever was and not a false memory) that you could ask the staff for some assistance and they would help you im sure. Everyone was so friendly and stuff like leave it to beaver.

  • Order: ate half the menu over the course of a week, fish, fries, burgers, soups, breakfasts, lunches, dinners, pizzas

  • Had great service, the food was delicious!

The restaurant had been sold and is being run by a new family. They were very friendly and inviting.

The same cooks are running the kitchen and the staff remains the same.

I'm still happy with this restaurant. I'm still getting the same great service/food, I've always had and love.

Going to the Gourmet reminds me of going home to my moms for a good home cooked dinner.

  • Under new Management in August 2011 -

The Pizza crust was under cooked and tasted terrible. It was 1 inch thick on one side and 1/4 inch on the other.

The Chicken fingers were extremely crisp because they were over done. I had to ask the waitress for the soup which was part of the meal.
The Ketchup tasted watered down with vinegar,

The steak was rare and was supposed to be well done. The steak was ordered with mushrooms which didn't come. We had to ask for gravy for the mash potatoes which was a mistake since it tasted awful.

The place has new owners and new cooks since the owner and his son used to be the cook. Place has really gone down hill . Wont be going back.

  • The gourmet tends to be the 'catch-all' of CP dining.
It's got breakfasts, lunches and dinners, and makes them all adequately.
I've never been blown-away by their food, but enjoy it enough to go there about once a month.
    It's good family dining.

  • I noticed that a reviewer below complained about dirty cutlery. This morning I had breakfast. I watched the waitress keep up with the flow of traffic, I watched her reject cutlery that must have been streaked or not clean-looking & quickly replace it with a cleaner one. My food did not take long to come. The kitchen is good, really good. They prepare food like they would if they were cooking for their own friends & family. There no formulizing of every single aspect like you find at the big chain restaurants. I'd be lost without this place. If this place ever closes, there'll be a McDonalds or a Wendy's or something like that here. The next place down from The Gourmet is Dairy Queen; I wouldn't eat there. Further down is a Harveys/Swiss Chalet; further down is A&W. I don't eat at any of these places because I suspect that, over the years, after having been ill enough times with no other explanation for it than having eaten at these places, it's a crap shoot & I'm no longer willing to play & pay.

I never get sick eating at The Gourmet Restaurant. And you won't find too many places anymore that give portions the size that they do for the price they charge.

Other places might charge about the same but give you only about half that much food that doesn't even taste as good.

Ask for a side order of ceasar salad sometime to go with your meal and see what you get, come on, I dare you!

    Their pizzas are highly recommended.

Burgers are huge and made with LEAN beef - not some mystery pattie made with a %age of some cereal from hell. I like my cereal in the morning thank you & not in my burger - real bacon - real cheese, with lettuce, tomato and a good bun, it's as big and as good as the fancy-priced 'pub' fare restaurants but you won't get the extras at those places.

More often than not, the server is not surprised when you ask if you can have the rest to go because it happens All The Time.

One more thing, go tell the cooks how good your food was when you're done. They're not zombies on automatic pilot - they're real honest to goodness people with a big smile for you when you let them know & you thank them for being there for you. If the culery is dirty, learn to say, *(now repeat after me) "This cultery doesn't look clean; could I have another please?" or "Could I have another spoon or knife or fork; this one doesn't look good - thanks."

If you act with respect - respect may be returned to you. And if regulars seem to get better treatment, it's probably because the servers get to know how many refills you're likely to have or some other thing. If you just sit there and fume about overlooked cutlery & you watch, catatonically, while everybody else gets served and say nothing, then nothing is what you can expect. Please speak up people, kindly, in a good way, and it might go a long way.

Thank you; thank you very much.

  • They open so early, that I can have breakfast BEFORE I go to bed because often enough, I'll be getting up way too late for breakfast. They have one of my favorites, Eggs Benedict and the coffee's way better than Tim Horton's - that stuff's awful. Yewww!

The service is what it is. The workers are doing the best they can. Hey - It's a rural type place - get over it - they're doing the best they can.

The owner, his son are both chefs in the kitchen. It's a good old-fashioned family-owned & run restaurant and we're lucky to still have places like this to go to - period.

You're in the country. Take your time. Take it easy. Relax. If you want small and sometimes tiny portions of bland, expensive, cookie cutter foods served to you quickly at higher prices with coffee that never tastes right no matter how you try to 'fix' it, then you probably won't find it at The Gourmet Restaurant EVER as long as the current people own it & operate it.

    It's a no brainer people...

  • Yes, I was a regular and have to agree fully that regulars are often treated special, and so maybe they should, after all they are regulars.

This is a good country diner, not fancy, or expensive, large portions. We usually took home the second half of meals for another meal.

Breakfasts were good, lots of coffee included. Unfortunately after repeatedly finding dirty coffee spoons and cups being brought to the table. We brought this up to the staff, then later to management, as they should be checking this prior to filling with hot coffee and serving. They don't seem to realize that most dirt is disolved by the hot coffee and so it is really bothersome when you do see crap stuck to the spoon after it soaked a while. Makes one wonder how many times they were dirty and the coffee hid the fact by disolving the dirt.

We found out that you may be treated special as a regular but not after complaining once too many. After 8 years of breakfasting there 50% of the time, we decided to give this place up for another across the street nearby.

We do still take-out the pizza as it is the best in town, only one with bbq sause for a bit of kick, but we dine at home on our dishes.

  • you get treated very well, friendly staff that go out of there way, clean and very much a family resturant. You get huge portions of nothing but home cooking..salad dressing (house) is to die for!! You will not be disappointed eating here, and you'll leave feeling to full!! I would rate this out of 100....100!!!!! We will always come here for dinner and the price for all that food for 2 people was 33.00 and change, now where could you get that in a city?? Not to mention friendly people and comfort too. Thanks Gourmet.....you've out done yourself again!!

  • Let me start by saying that I frequent the Gourmet quite a bit.
We popped in for breakfast and we had what was most likely the worst service ever. The waitress would turn around to talk to regulars in the middle of our orders, we only got 1 cup of coffee, Our orders took well over an hour to come to us even though people who came in after us got their food before us, we were given french fries instead of home fries and were told "deal with it". Getting service if you are not a regular is like pulling teeth. I tip well, I'm polite yet I still can't get good service. Maybe I'll get better service at Broadways once it opens.
