When you fly from England to Ontario for a meal, it had better be good. OK, I didn’t come just for the meal, but within a few hours of landing I found myself with my mother and brother in the dining room of Langdon Hall. They had eaten here several times before, but this was my first visit.
The dining room is large and comfortably furnished. There is another room that was being used for a private party the night we were there. We were welcomed at the door and ushered into a foyer with a log fire at one end, and then straight into the dining room. The atmosphere is formal but relaxed, and other patrons included couples and businesspeople entertaining clients.
A new winter menu had been introduced, with starters such as Digby Scallop Soup ($18) served with carpaccio and black truffle coulis or Sesame Tuna ($21) served with avocado and sweet chili vinaigrette, kohlrabi and breakfast radish. However we all opted for the Duck & Goat’s Cheese Tortellini ($18) with charred tomato relish, parsley root and parmesan infused cauliflower. These were served on a long plate, three in a serving. The pasta and filling were perfect, and the tomato relish nestled on top of the tortellini provided a tangy counterpoint to the duck and goats cheese.
The main courses include Pan Roasted Pickerel ($38) with harvest corn, smoked mushrooms, fromage blanc and pumpkin vinaigrette au jus or Lamb Canon ($38) with crispy lamb belly, fruit and nut crumble, navet and a cèpe broth. My mother and brother opted for the Stuffed Pheasant Breast ($37) served with Brussels sprouts, black trumpets, St. Jorge petit onions, ginger gastrique and Pommery mustard, while I had Glazed Ontario Bison “Mignon” ($43) with braised onions, bulls blood beet gratin, smeared walnut and sauce Masala. The bison was served medium-rare, and it was very tender. It didn’t have much flavour though, and I would have liked a bit more of the sauces, which were excellent. I tasted the pheasant, which was melt in the mouth buttery. The bulls blood beet gratin stood out as one of the most interesting vegetable dishes I’ve had in a long time.
For dessert, we went our separate ways. I had Chocolate, Hot & Cold ($16), white chocolate and pear Cannelloni with hot chocolate consommé, chocolate almond filigrees and dehydrated bergamot milk chocolate mousse. My Brother had Three Textures ($15), saffron scented apple panna cotta, green apple lime sorbet and apple and cassis beignet while my mother had Sweet East ($14), pineapple gelée, lemongrass cream, coconut sorbet, sweet basil seed sauce and green tea macaroons. The hot chocolate consommé was interesting, poured over the cannelloni at the table. They were delicious, but I wasn’t struck by either the filigrees or the dehydrated mousse. We all agreed that my brother had made the best choice.
The meal ended with a tray of berried and petit fours.Langdon Hall has an extensive and award-winning wine list. Prices go into the stratosphere, but there are bargains to be had. One of these is 1998 La Mancha, Gran Reserva, Gran Oristan, which we ordered, worth every penny of $60.
At $100 per person minimum including wine, this is a restaurant for special occasions. But the food, wine and ambiance is worth every penny. One of the best in Ontario.

I took my boyfriend to Langdon Hall for his birthday. Overall, it was a wonderful experience.
Server was attentative, but not overly as to be annoying. All the food was delicious and cooked perfectly! Not huge portions, but we did not leave feeling hungry either. The perfect amount of food. The sommelier picked out some really great glasses of wine to compliment our meal (can't remember what they were unforunately, but they were excellent).
We are going back for all of our special occasions after such a wonderful experience. It may be a bit expensive, but well worth every penny!
- Order: Appetizers - Frog’s Leg & Celeriac Raviolo, Scallop Soup with Quails eggs; Main - we both had the Canon of Fort McLeod Lamb; Dessert - Mocha Soufflé, three-course blind tasting (with the pavloa and two different souffles)

This is easily our favourite restaurant in Southwestern Ontario -- a well-deserved 5-diamond restaurant. The ambiance is second-to-none, the service is truly exceptional, and the food is always sublime. We were married at Langdon Hall and return every year to relive the experience. This time we also stayed overnight at this fabulous hotel, and were just as delighted to dine there for breakfast.
The Valentine's weekend menu was lovely. This was our first experience with their new chef and we continue to be delighted with the inventiveness, phenomenal flavour and artistic plating.
Portions are perfectly in line with dining rooms of this quality, where one usually partakes of at least four courses.
Perfect, as always!
- Order: amuse-bouche of cauliflower pannacotta, Bison Tataki, Shrimp cocktail, salmon tartare, Braised lamb shoulder with smoked Barley risotto, buttered Lobster with baby leeks and creamy polenta, Chocolate marquis and cappucinos for dessert; pregnant so unfortunately couldn't have wine this visit - had sparkling water instead...

If you have the money, and are in the mood to get dressed up and splurge on yourself, you should definitely go to this fabulous restaurant. The service is simply phenomenal! The sommelier knows what he's talking about; I don't drink reds usually, but I took his advice and it is the first red I have ever actually enjoyed (I had 2 glasses in fact). We only had 3 glasses of wine between the 2 of us- a whole bottle was outside of our budget, but I can only imagine how phenomenal any of these vinatges would be.
Portions are a bit on the small side in my opinion, but the taste is beyond expectations. So eat slowly, enjoy the company and you probably won't notice the small portions.
I love dessert- so I was a tad dissapointed in the tiny portions. But I'll live!
Next time I would plan on skipping dessert (maybe I'd have something waiting at home), and I'd splurge on a bottle of wine!
It is quite expensive, but would be a spectacular venue for popping the question or to celebrate any special occassion.
P.S.: I've also been to the spa and it's to-die-for! Now I just have to actually spend a night in the hotel. :-) - Order: Wines recommended by Sommelier as matching main courses. Foie Gras and Rabbit Tortelinni appetizers. Lamb and Beef Rib-eye mains. 3 artisanal chocolates. Souffle tasting dessert.

Excellent fine dining at a five diamond restaurant (not casual, as it's listed here!) Creative dishes and a large wine list.
The atmosphere is definitely formal and traditional, but it's not stuffy or awkward.
To get there you need to drive down a long tree lined lane and then you see the large mansion appear, which makes for a very good first impression!
It is not cheap, but a really nice treat for a special occasion or romantic dinner. - Order: Beef tenderloin, wine, dessert.
