  • For the price we paid, we expected a spectacular meal; however, we were very disappointed. The food was decent, but certainly not worth the price!

The decor was outdated and the whole restaurant felt cramped. You could hardly walk through the dining area or pull out your chair without bumping into something or someone. The tables were far too close together - we kept bumping elbows with the table next to us and could not hear each other over the conversation at the next table. There was also a large party in the bar area that was very noisy. On top of that, the washrooms were dirty, outdated, and the faucets dripped. The cutlery looked very well worn and the plates were old and outdated.

Based on the experience we had, I don't know how they can justify charging the prices they do. This place is totally overrated!

If you enjoy spending too much money on food that is just OK in an atmosphere that is hellish, then the Lord Nelson is for you. Otherwise, my advice would be to save your money and go somewhere else!

  • When it comes to fine dining, Lord Nelsons definitely does not disappoint. With delicious food and quality service, I would have to say this is one of the classiest restaurants in the Hamilton area.

The first thing you notice when you walk in is the warming and peaceful atmosphere. There are only a handful of tables and a bar in the whole restaurant and it makes for a almost private and intimate dinner experience. This is not a jeans and t-shirt type of place, everyone inside is dressed professional and fancy. I would recommend a dress and heels for the women and dress pants and button down shirt for the men. And obviously from my previous statements this is not really what I would call a family restaurant. With the close tables and quiet music I would think children would feel out of place at an establishment like this. Nonetheless I feel like it is a great date night place, very romantic and relaxing.

The menu I would say is perfect for the restaurant. It includes a variety of different meal choices but doesn't overwhelm the customer. We had chosen the Peppercorn steak and the Filet mignon for our main courses. I would say that they were better then what I expected, cooked and seasoned perfectly, I would definitely recommend there food to anyone. The main courses range anywhere from $20 - $60 which is a little higher then your average dinner but in the end I think it is worth the little extra price for the quality.

The only concern I had about going here was their location. It was a little difficult to find as it is located in a small plaza tucked away beside a laundromat. Also the exterior of the restaurant is not what you would expect for a high class place like this, and I didn't find it all that appealing. The front doors are very Castle like and there are no windows at all. At first glance I thought it was closed. But if you can get past that It was great experience and I would recommend it to anyone.

  • My husband and I went to this place last Sunday night, looking forward to a quiet romantic dinner. We have been here before and enjoyed it, but it is pricey. I don't know anywhere that charges $35dollars for a shrimp cocktail, and the wines are ridiculously high. Nonetheless, we went back and ended up walking out after our drinks, and thankfully before ordering food.
A party of about eight came in after us, and we were dismayed to see about six young kids in the group. You could hear the whining and wheedling before they reached their seats, and one of them started incessantly kicking his seat. Of course, the parents had no control and did little more than the standard insipid shussing that their brats ignored. One of the boys, about eight, was told by his father he "wanted to talk to him", presumably in a feeble attempt to control him and the brat replied "Well I don't want to talk to you".
I have given up hope expecting most of today's parents to have any consideration for others, in public when it comes to imposing their brats on others, but the fact that a restaurant with these prices allow this to happen is unacceptable in our books. There is a separate room they could have seated this noisy group in, but they put them out with everyone else and had no concern whatsoever in how it affected the rest of the room.
The whining and pleading and shushing continued (the pleading being done by the boorish parents) so we asked our waiter for the cheque. No questions were asked as to why we were leaving ( I think they knew) and we had made reservations ahead of time. I guess the good old days of adult only atmospheres and "seen and not heard" are gone, but we were sure not going to drop about 200-300 dollars in a place that permits this.
We left and went to Lord Byron's in Waterdown, and the 10 minute drive was worth it. Not only is the food every bit as good, its cheaper. Their shrimp cocktail was 15dollars, not 35.
    We won't be going back.

  • I've been in the resto biz for 25 years, all fine dining serving, managment, etc. Wine prices are exorbitant. Oysters Rockefeller good, but disappointing due to processed cheese slices and knorr hollandsaise sauce, surely at these prices you could do better!!! Still nice atmosphere. Too bad later on, maitre 'd and hostess get drunk behind the bar...ugly.

  • When we want and crave a great steak we travel from Toronto to Burlington. Everytime we walk through the door we are treated like family. One of the best oysters rockefeller ever to be had is at this restaurant. We ordered a ceaser salad for three that was amazing. Our steaks were made perfectly to order and the staff was so much fun. We had such a great time. Thanks for the great night. The martini's were amazing.

  • This was our first time to the Lord Nelson. We had heard about this 35-yr old landmark and finally had to give it a try. We were not disappointed. Every aspect of our meal was fabulous from the enormous shrimp to the made-at-our-table caeasar salad to the generously portioned incredibly savourous tenderloin house specialty. As good as the food is, the service is even better. We showed up at 7pm without reservations on a Saturday evening and there were no open spots as the restaurant was fully booked except for the bar area. The owner noticed our displeasure and took us immediately to a table within the main seating area of the restaurant. Our waiter was polished, professional and EXTREMELY attentive. Overall 10... you cannot miss.

  • It has been months since I stepped into this restaurant and STILL feel compelled to write this review. Twice in a row I had the WORST steaks I have ever had and paid more for the priviledge. It isn't always about the terrible food; once in a while you expect the odd problem, it is about how they correct the problem! This was not even attempted despite my discussion with the server! If I wanted to wait and hassle the staff and management, I suppose I could have pushed the issue and sent my incrediblely overcooked and gristley steaks back, but the rest of my party was eating. After complaining when the server finally came back to check on "how our steaks were", I left my steak and did not touch it, not even an offer to get me a new one or take it off the bill. NOTHING. My family were regulars and friends of regulars, none of which eat here anymore.
We all have had similar experiences, too bad, I would say this was the best restaurant in town at one time. The prices went WAY UP and the quality WAY DOWN.

  • The restaurant decor itself is nice. The floor though of is poor quality so you hear every step everyone takes. While the restaurant is full of regulars, as first timers we were seated in the corner by a rude hostess. The waiter came quicly and served us our drinks, but them insulted my husband who is a chef when he asked what the difference was between the house steak and the others...the waiter went on to say well steaks are cut in different ways...when my husband asked about how they were made. The bread is toasted and not served with butter or oil? Yum, dry bread with our watered down $10 each drinks for the bar. Then the salads made at your table - I have had better out of the bag, we have had salad made at your table many times and it is always wonderful and tasty, this one was tasteless, really another $11 each. Then our dinners $50 each, which the fish itself and the steak were okay, they were really runied by the over salted beans and caluiflower served with the meal. The rice was overcooked and the garlic mashed was just mashed with pieces of garlic in it - end of any chance of romance for the night. The white wine was okay, but they served me the wrong red wine from their small list of glass wines. The dessert was usual, no fresh fruit for the cheesecake just fake sauces. We could not get out of there fast enough. Having driven from Oakville, I think we could have had a similar dinner at IKEA!

  • Our visit was in Nov/07 and it's taken me this long to write a review. At first I was going to just let it go but then thought there maybe others that should be made aware. We were regular customers and always had a great experience -the food and service had always been excellent until this evening. My sister-in-law and I order the bone-in steak which has always been cooked to perfection however this time the steaks came well done when we had asked for medium rare. Understanding this could happen we got the attention of our server to explain it was over done and we requested that it be taken back...you would too for the price we were paying. I must also state that I'm not in the habit of sending food back. The server removed the plates with a comment "this just doesn't happen here" and the next thing we knew the owner was at our table WITH the steaks we had just sent back, questioning us as if we didn't know the difference between well done and medium rare. I don't think I have ever come across anyone as rude as this individual. To top it off when we went to leave the ower made an off-handed comment "I hope I didn't ambarrass you". I just looked at him with surprise and responded that he actually did and walked out. We won't be back and we pass along our experience to anyone that asks "Have you been to the Lord Nelson lately?"

  • Over priced food with OK service. Good wine list but with outrageous NY prices. Table was poorly placed next to the noisy waiter station and a busy aisle. Shrimp cocktail had 4 large tasteless shrimp too cold to enjoy. Portehouse special was cooked alright but not very tasty. Sea Bass was very small portion for the $42 price tag. Salmon was less than special and the Tuna was feeble. Main course served with pretty small and boring baked potato and a single cauliflower piece. No salad...that was extra. All in all not a very enjoyable dinner.

  • Order: Porthouse special....Sea Bass....Salomon steak.......Tuna steak. Shrimp cocktail. Aussie wine.
