I went with a buddy on a Wednesday night. The place was dead. There were three tables with 2-4 people at each. There were 3 wait staff and a bartender and I had to go to the bar to ask for another beer.....TWICE! When will this place get it together? Obviously never. They either don't care or don't have a clue. (The site wouldn't let me submit this unless I rated the food even though I didn't eat while I was there.)

This was the worst service experience I've ever had. My husband and friends and I went there for dinner and drinks on St. Patrick's day. Our server came quickly for our beer order. However, nothing went right after that. We had to flag the server down to give our food order. Our glasses sat empty for 15 minutes and we had to go to the bar to order another round of beers. When we got our food, the garlic bread came with the our main courses and the server blamed the chef saying that "everything came at once." Not too bright, because the cheese had already hardened and was cold. It was obvious to all of us that it just sat there waiting to be delivered. We were not given cutlery and asked for some. The server did not bring it and my friend had to go get it. I guess the owners/managers thought it would be a busy night and must have over-staffed because there were several staff sitting at their own table eating and drinking, but still we waited! When I went to pay the bill at the bar the bartender stood there at the debit machine with her back to men hunched over, and eating! I stood there for at least 2 minutes with my bank card and bill in-hand. She took a few glances back at me but still ignored me. The two owners/managers were also standing there and neither said a word. One of them was sitting at the bar also eating and he talked to a friend about how good the bartender was. Finally, I spoke up and he asked her to help me. I found this absolutely outrageous. We all did. As we were leaving, I told the two owners/managers that "this was the worst service experience I have ever had" and they looked at me with half smiles and said "we'll try better next time." They were neither concerned nor surprised by my statement. This is not about getting used to new people. Its about horrible service and uncaring and inexperienced management.

Wait staff is young and inexperienced - wrong drinks were presented (for a different table), and/or not what we ordered (right table/wrong drinks). Good stuffed jalapeno's and fish cakes but the chef needs to work on the acompanying sauces - pepper/curry pastes (as a basis) go a long way in this business. The Guiness steak/kidney pie was dissapointing for the enterior was mostly gravy and you can tell that the top pastry was just nuked before it arrived - very tough. They need to create in a smaller vessel and oven cook the pastry (flaky people!). Back to the wait staff; moving from back to front of the pub on three occasions; one wait staff in particular would not move to let the patron through first - looking the other way and walking right through them. They need a pro to go through the menu, its presentation and to properly train the wait staff. The place has potential but its untapped, or held back for a larger profit margin.
I would go back, but for only drinks and appetizers.

What happened? We were shocked with the service & food at the Black Bull. Now that I know the previous staff quit we will not be going to the Bull in the future.

Well. Everything's changed. I've learned that the manager, bartender, and all of the wait- staff have resigned. (God only knows what happened.) These people were what made this bar special. We've lost our local. I can only imagine what this will mean for the town of Bolton.

My husband and I bring our friends and family from out-of-town here regularly. Tracey, the manager, and Eric, the bartender, make this pub great. They are professional, friendly, and warm. The food is good and its home-made, not like the pre-made, packaged stuff you get at most pubs.

The Bull is a classic 'local' pub with a menu that goes far beyond pub fare. They have a cook that makes some of the best samosas I've ever tasted. Thursday nights he makes an array of Indian dishes that are consistently amazing. Their curry dishes rock, as do their regular pub menu. Always fresh, always friendly, The Black Bull is the perfect place to bring the whole family for a delicious meal or just enjoy a pint by yourself.
Considering the other pubs in Bolton (Main Street Station, for example, is one of the worst pubs on the planet--their French Onion soup is topped with a process cheese slice--need I say more?) the choice for an evening out is clear.
- Order: Samosa, followed by chicken curry, with some yummy pints to wash it down. Grilled Cajun salmon with fresh ceasar salad on the side and more pints. Kids had the fish and chips (delicious).
