  • AMAZING HOME-COOKED FOOD! the portions were very large - We had the Fish & Chips and the Steak & Mushroom Guiness Pie. Both were very hearty, tasty and filling. The Fish had a lovely light batter, the chips were hand cut an excellent. The Guiness Pie was rich with light, fluffy pastry to dip all that great gravey in! It also came with home-made mashed potatoes that were served hot and delicious!

Real Food Served Here! Sorry that some people do not understand that you have to wait for real food to be cooked just for you. If you do not appreciate good food, go somwhere where they serve it after it has been sitting under a heat lamp for hours. This is one on the best restaurants I have been to in a while, and I am a well travelled Foodie! I highly recommend the Black Bull Pub & Eatery to anyone looking for good home-made food!

  • I don't normally write up reviews, but if this one saves the next guest the hassle we endured, then I've done a good deed!
Half of our party entered the pub which had all of 3 people sitting at the bar. We seated ourselves and waited....and waited...and waited. FINALLY, after 20 minutes, the server that had been standing behind the bar chatting it up with the 3 clients gathered a few menus and greeted us...the customers. She apologized for not having enough menus first off (she gave us 5). Tell me they have more than 5 for the entire restaurant??!! At this point we had commented on the lack of customer service but resigned to stay as we were waiting upon a few more guests. We proceeded to place our drink order. 4 Pepsi's, 2.5 beers, 3 waters and a glass of wine. Simple enough right? Well we waited well over 30 minutes just to get our drinks. As I saw her struggling to coordinate the drink orders on her cheat sheet I suggested that she identify each order under one individual's name to aid her in processing the separate bills. She felt her method was better. When the drinks finally arrived, they only brought 3/4 of the order and we waited another 10 minutes for them to bring us the remaining 4 drinks. By this time we had assumed that the bar typically is slow and likely was understaffed. Several other customers came in...and left. We watched as they waited and waited. They probably did the smart thing and headed over to Wendy's! Over an hour after we placed our drink orders we finally were fortunate enough to be able to submit our meal orders. We watched as more clients came in and received their food/drink orders and even paid and left!! Not once did this woman behind the bar come and ask us if we needed anything but more importantly, never once did she apologize for the lack of service we were receiving. Then there was another body behind the bar. Voila! More staff had been called in to help with the growing number of customers entering into the pub. This individual clearly was not a regular employee but did his best to deliver drinks and cutlery and then the food began to "trickle" and I mean "trickle" out to our table. This process took another half hour! One of the guests didn't even receive hers until the rest of us were done. Remeber it took close to an hour to get the food to begin with! Wings and fries were edible - it takes a real knob to mess up frying potatoes and wings. The French Onion soup had cheddar cheese in it. What part of "french onion soup" implies that cheddar cheese should be include in that dish?? I'm not sure about most civilized people, but I do like to eat my soup with a spoon. We had to wait 15 minutes to get the server's attention and request this. When he showed up with the spoons he asked a most intelligent question "who needed the spoons?" Hmmm, I don't know - let me take a stab at this one....maybe the three people with the SOUP??!!! Which I add received a satisfactory grade in the edible category. Unfortunately the buschetta was a mishmash of raw tomatoes slapped onto bread with green peppers that looked like they had died a painful death and all of that covered up in cheese. Oh might I add that this dish came out even after the missing dish finally made it's appearance. That mysterious dish was named the chicken and shrimp pad thai. Rubber and a funky pulled/overcooked chicken-wannabe were the main ingredients. This dish wasn't even edible. Period!
By this time we had somewhat killed the hunger that drew us to this place to begin with. Now we just wanted to go home. No servers to be found, anywhere!! The only visible people were the 3 locals who were parked at the bar. Having reached the end of our rope, I decided to go find the server and attempt to work through the individual bills. That began with me having to walk into the kitchen and call out for some assistance. The "chef" came out and said he didn't know how to settle the bill so he had to go find the server and disappeared. I over

If you can not appreciate good food, you deserve Wendy's! If you are concerned about the speed of your food - Eat at Fast Food. And who orders Pad Thai at a Pub??? Order PUB FOOD at a PUB. Makes sense, no?

  • Ok pub but food is hit and miss. Bruschetta is raw tomatoes on white bread. Pub fare is decent but starters are weak. Fine for a pint, but getting a bit dingy.

  • This place has the BEST Food in Bolton and is known by the locals as for exactly that. If your hungry and want more then Mickey Dee's then The Black Bull is the place to go. The chefs are extraordinary, with culinary skills from the most high end restaurants in the city you want the food without the fuss and the monkey suit The Bull is the place to go. Enjoy I did.

  • A great traditional pub with cozy atmosphere and excellent food!

If you're in the mood for a relaxed environment, great food and good service, you seriously need to check this place out!

It has all the traditional pub foods we all love, but the quality is well beyond any other restaurant in Bolton. The portion sizes are huge! You will not walk away hungry.

It is a smaller establishment and it does fill up very quickly on a Friday night. It's best to go early to get a good table.

  • I went with a buddy on a Wednesday night. The place was dead. There were three tables with 2-4 people at each. There were 3 wait staff and a bartender and I had to go to the bar to ask for another beer.....TWICE! When will this place get it together? Obviously never. They either don't care or don't have a clue. (The site wouldn't let me submit this unless I rated the food even though I didn't eat while I was there.)

  • This was the worst service experience I've ever had. My husband and friends and I went there for dinner and drinks on St. Patrick's day. Our server came quickly for our beer order. However, nothing went right after that. We had to flag the server down to give our food order. Our glasses sat empty for 15 minutes and we had to go to the bar to order another round of beers. When we got our food, the garlic bread came with the our main courses and the server blamed the chef saying that "everything came at once." Not too bright, because the cheese had already hardened and was cold. It was obvious to all of us that it just sat there waiting to be delivered. We were not given cutlery and asked for some. The server did not bring it and my friend had to go get it. I guess the owners/managers thought it would be a busy night and must have over-staffed because there were several staff sitting at their own table eating and drinking, but still we waited! When I went to pay the bill at the bar the bartender stood there at the debit machine with her back to men hunched over, and eating! I stood there for at least 2 minutes with my bank card and bill in-hand. She took a few glances back at me but still ignored me. The two owners/managers were also standing there and neither said a word. One of them was sitting at the bar also eating and he talked to a friend about how good the bartender was. Finally, I spoke up and he asked her to help me. I found this absolutely outrageous. We all did. As we were leaving, I told the two owners/managers that "this was the worst service experience I have ever had" and they looked at me with half smiles and said "we'll try better next time." They were neither concerned nor surprised by my statement. This is not about getting used to new people. Its about horrible service and uncaring and inexperienced management.

  • Wait staff is young and inexperienced - wrong drinks were presented (for a different table), and/or not what we ordered (right table/wrong drinks). Good stuffed jalapeno's and fish cakes but the chef needs to work on the acompanying sauces - pepper/curry pastes (as a basis) go a long way in this business. The Guiness steak/kidney pie was dissapointing for the enterior was mostly gravy and you can tell that the top pastry was just nuked before it arrived - very tough. They need to create in a smaller vessel and oven cook the pastry (flaky people!). Back to the wait staff; moving from back to front of the pub on three occasions; one wait staff in particular would not move to let the patron through first - looking the other way and walking right through them. They need a pro to go through the menu, its presentation and to properly train the wait staff. The place has potential but its untapped, or held back for a larger profit margin.

I would go back, but for only drinks and appetizers.
