- ReviewAfghani food among all the Japanese that one finds in St. Mark's Place, Khyber Pass is a small but attractive restaurant with delicious food. If you are fond of Indian cuisine, then it is highly likely that you will enjoy the food here as well which is not dissimilar in spices or style, though more like biriyani with an emphasis on meat, than the typical curry. That which I had was a delicious rice dish with bits of cornish game hen mixed in. Though the hen itself was a bit too crispy for my taste, the rice, mixed with dried fruit, nuts, and spices was definitely one of the more delicious things I have tasted in a while. For about $10 when adding in the cardamom tea (not to my taste as it turned out but interesting to try) and the complimentary delicious dark bread, it was not a bad deal for dinner.
The restaurant itself is not very large, but I found it attractive with its dark red decor, a low ceiling with thick cloth gathered around the lights, Afghani robes or paintings on the walls, and a few most romantic looking seats in the traditional style consisting of cushions on a raised floor. These were in the windows overlooking a few outdoor tables, surrounded by rope lights and quite romantic. Indeed I could not help but think that this would have been a good place for a date.
As a side note, for those who like to smoke, hookahs are available to borrow with a wide range of tobaccos to try.
