  • Highly overated food, I've never been happy with my meal, but I'm very picky and others that I dine with seem to always love it. It's never terrible, but I've never been blown away either, and there always seems to be a problem of some sort, you probably don't eat like me so I'm sure you'll enjoy it, if you are like me just get a burger, you won't hate it. The atmosphere is the best in town and the beer selection is out of this world. I certainly recommend going there before a night on the town

  • I love this place! Moved to Saint John about 5 years ago and have loved the Ale House ever since. I worked at a hotel for a few years and always recommended this to my guests. One of the top placed to eat in Saint John.

  • I have been to the Ale House many times. Every time I have very much enjoyed myself. The food is great. The apps are all very good and I think my husband and I have tried them all. Can not go wrong with the Ale House for beer, coctails etc. They serve food upstairs in the resturant as does the pub downstairs. Someone mentioned yuppie? I find that so hard to believe.. Now I'd say if you want to say Yuppie try or stay away from Grannan's depending on if you are looking for that or not.. I like grannan's very much myself.. but of course you are looking at some bigger prices for your meals. My husband is at the Alehouse at least once a week to eat sometimes books his business meetings their also! We dine there on dates and find you can go for apps and drinks or a very good more pricey meal.. well worth it!

  • Before today, the only occasions on which I had been to the Ale House were a couple of times in the bar (great selection of draft beers/ales) and once for the retirement party of a colleague. Today was the first time I came here to eat.

This is a nice place, if a bit "yuppie" for my tastes. No matter, it's still a nice place and all are welcome. It occupies 2 floors in the Market Square mall, the bottom floor being more a bar area (but of course the full menu is still available), and two (or three) separate seating areas upstairs. Lots of room, and upstairs has— at least on one side— a good view of Saint John harbor and the Market Square boardwalk.

This is a restaurant with a professional staff; quick, efficient, polite, what-have-you. It is a busy place and has a good turnover of clientele. The staff move at a near-lightning pace... Zip, Zap, Zoom. It's a good thing, though; they're not running, but golly, they're not too far from it.

So much for place. On to plates. (Sorry)

A lovely, cold pint of Clancy's Amber Ale was brought first, soon followed (reasonably soon) by the appetizer, a delicious feta bruschetta, topped with diced fresh tomato, brushed with an obviously high-quality olive oil, feta cheese, etc. Very, very good. I could order this as a light meal all on its own. The light acidity of the tomato worked perfectly against the cheese, and the level of garlic was excellent. Yum-a-rama, and no mistake.

Main Course: Chicken Parmesan. Another good choice on my part. It arrived not long after I had finished the appetizer, and smelled and looked wonderful. The chicken was breaded and succulent, sliced and laid upon a bed of papardelle noodles, covered in a "home made" (according to the menu) marinara sauce, all completely smothered in melted parmesan and cheddar (!) cheese, and accented with two slices of grilled garlic bread.

It was delicious. Was it perfect? No. But I have no idea what was missing. An herb of some type? A bit of pepper? A strolling violinist? No idea, really, but SOMETHING was missing. Perhaps if I understood food more deeply I could put my finger on it, but... I don't and can't.

I would definitely order it again, no fear! All-in-all it was an excellent meal, nicely presented, served by efficient, professional servers.

To quote "Ahnold"; "I'll be back".
