  • $8 buffet vs $19 buffet.

Now I know the difference. We went for dinner Sunday and my wife said she'd like to try West Garden since she hadn't gone there since she was a kid. It has gone downhill.

Although the buffet looked large, some of the dishes were never replaced. There was no rice and the noodles were similar to the way another review described. Basically dried out noodle with a few onions thrown in. I tried some sort of chicken and I was also lucky enough to find the last piece of beef in the black pepper beef. Everything tasted the same. The only thing that was good was the chicken wings. I don't normally like Chinese chicken wings, but they were just being put out and I grabbed one out of desparation get something fresh.

I didn't try the roast beef or ham, but it was just a big slab of meat that you carve yourself. I tend to avoid areas wehre the general public is allowed to wield a carving knife to hack off their own share.

If you don't mind peeling your own shrimp, they did have a big bowl of them at the salad bar, but I would question how old they were, given the fact they looked untouched and how old everything else at the buffet was.

Dessert were the standard ice cream and commercial pastries. The pie I had wasn't bad, but everything else looked dry.

To top it off, they only give you one free refill of your little glass of pop. In this day and age where everyone give free refills why annoy your customers over something that only costs a couple of cents per glass? Having asid that, the only reason I know about the refill policy is I heard the waitress tell someone else. She never did ask us if we wanted refills.

Overall I think they have gone downhill and are aiming for the lower end of the buffet market since the other Chinese buffet came along. To summarize... You would think that if $8 a person is all you could afford to take your family out, you could probably get by at West Garden... On the contrary, I would reccomend you wait twice as long and save enough money to go elsewhere.

That's the best I can say. Unless you are doing takeout and know exactly what you want and you can stand the service. I asked for a quarter chicken and they said all they do is half chicken. Then why is it a choice? For that matter, he took a whole chicken off the grill and chopped it up to make my order. I also heard someone order fish. However its not on the menu. Would be nice to know there is a choice. There is a very large sign under the menu that says you can only sub fries for potato, but it costs $1.50 more? While I am talking about overcharging, I should mention if you want extra sauce get them to squirt it on the chicken for you. Otherwise it costs another .50 and its cold from being in the fridge and they only have hot sauce and no mild on the side.

So having got that over with I must comment the food is very good. The chicken is nice and moist and the rice was tasty although I lucked out and got a fresh batch. The potato is good and has a nice spice on it.

I should mention you can eat in but they only have a stainless stell counter and a small number of barstools where you can sit and eat. Plus the place was freezing cold, which is surprising since there is a big grill running in the same room.

So in the end I Would say its worth trying if you want take out. But if you are willing to drive up the Mavis and Brittania, I would suggest you try Fernandos.

  • I have found out that I love peri-peri. The chicken was nice and moist and the spice was good. Rice was a little dry and salad was just, well salad. I have also had the chicken wings, which are grilled. Nice change from fried.

Price was a little high, but will post back on the "other" Portugese restaurant I have found so we can make a fair comparison.

Service is cafeteria style. You order and sit down and they bring it to you. Music consisted of what seemed like a rap radio station. Not my taste, but there were a lot of young people there and they seemed to be enjoying it.

  • Don't let the appearance fool you. This is a great place to grab a bite. I happened to be at the park nearby and saw this little burrito place. With a name like "Burrito Boyz" I might pass it off as some attempt to be trendy. However the lineup was out the door. I am very happy to say I gave it a try and always try to eat there when I am in Port Credit.

Just be aware, it is take out only at this location. Generally you place your order and get a number and either wait with the crowd or step outside. Just keep you ears peeled for your number because they tend to play loud music.

More info and other locations are on their website at burritoboyz dot ca.

  • An alternative buffet worth checking out.

I was trying to find a buffet other than Chinese or Indian and this suited me just fine. I tend to like to try "a bit of everything", which is what makes buffets appealing to me. I found BFG (Wedding^D)Buffet here on Restaurantica and decided to check it out.

The restaurant is squeezed in between Yuk Yuk's and Swiss Chalet, but it goes back a long way and the area around the buffet is very open and nicely decorated.

Being as it was Wednesday and not too busy, all the customers were seated in the bar area. It has a nice open feeling with a large row of windows along one side. It has separate doors as well, so could be used for a private function. There was only one server, but she was pleasant and all the dirty plates were swept away during the trips to the buffet.

The food for the most part was fresh and hot. Other than the stuffed peppers looking a little dried out, the other 20 or so items on the hot buffet were appealing. There was also a grill area serving souvlaki, beefteki and a few other standards. The salad bar ingredients were limited, but fresh and tasty, including a wonderful tzatziki. The hummus was good, but not as strong as the average Greek food fan would like.

Dessert always seems to be a favourite amongst people who like Greek food and BFGB offers a good choice. Besides some standard cakes and ice cream, there are some traditional such as spice cookies, havla, and a very good baklava.

I would recommend this to anyone who likes Greek food, or buffet fans looking for something different. There is enogh choice that anyone in the party who doesn't like Greek food could still find enough to eat. Vegetarians could also get by, but might want to check the ingredients list carefully.

As of writing, adult buffet price is $19.95 for dinner Monday through Sunday. Lunch prices are lower, and there is a $4 "sharing" option for the little ones.

  • This review is for the new location at 1027 Speers Rd, but there is no entry for it. Service was quick, but we all found our food was dry. Turned out they forgot to give us sauce, but we didn't notice until we looked around. They claim to bake their own pitas, but if you look closely at the menu, the "final baking" is done onsite (like the way Tim Horton's makes their doughnuts). That said, the pitas themselves were quite tasty, just what was in them could use some improvement. Portion size was average for lunch. Could have done to get some fries or something on the side. I overheard a server mention lunch specials to another customer, but our server didn't say anything to us.

Comparitively, Adonis is about a dollar more for their pita sandwich and the portions are much bigger and tastier.

At the time of writing they are awaiting their liquor license.

  • Best Roti and other Trini food in the area! I work in an office enarby and every day you'll find some of our staff in there. The food is great, with the only complaint being that the heat level tends to vary from day to day. Variety is small, but enough to keep things interesting for everyone, including the halal and vegetarian groups in our staff.

As for the service, the staff is very nice and patient with the newcomers to the food. Best suggestion if you are planning on coming in right at noon is to order ahead. Their menu and number is on the website: korisroti dot ca.

The atmosphere is no more than I would expect for a shop of this size. There are two tables inside and a picnic table outside, so again, don't expect to sit if you come during lunch hour.

To sum up, given the limited number of places to eat in the area (particularly at lunch), this is a favourite of mine. I would recommend it highly especially if you are looking for something other than traditional American food.

  • All You Can Eat in the heart of Oakville.

The other day I was looking for an all-you-can-eat sushi in the Oakville area. After stumbling around various search engines, I happened to come across Mika Sushi. Seemed like there was some good things to say about it, so I stopped by for dinner on Wednesday night.

On first impression, you would think it was not meant to be. The restaurant is small. Maybe four booths on each side a three tables in the middle. However the staff is great and their sushi chef does an excellent job. They offer all-you-can-eat as well as a la carte. Being the type of person who likes to try a little of everything I went for the former.

The food was great. I had several different rolls as well as some items from the kitchen. One thing to note is if you are eating by yourself, the portions tend to be a bit large. For example, one order of the Mika rolls was eight pieces. They were quite tasty however and in all items I found the meats and fish to be nice and fresh and flavouring was excellent. Tempura wasn't as crisp as I like. However everything was good and served with attention to appearance.

When I came in around 5:15-5:30, there was only one other table occupied. However when I left by 6:45, all the tables were full and there was a steady takeout business as well. Good sign for a Wednesday, so hopefully this is a sign the business will continue to flourish.

As with all AYCE sushi, try to get several copies of the order form at the beginning of your meal and then when your order arrives you can have your next order ready. Otherwise you usually have to flag the server down if you want to order more. Also standard practice is charging you for any leftovers and adding a tip to the bill automatically.

I found the server was pretty good, although I was seated right next to the sushi counter. So he could tell when I was done.

Price for dinner during the week is $18.99.

  • We have been to Taal twice now for dianner and are going for lunch this week. The buffet is excellent and fresh and has good variety considering its small size. I recommend saving room for the baked carrot dessert. The owner came to see us at our table both times to find out how things were going. If you are fimilar with Sangam restaurant in Mississauga, they are the same owners.
