  • Been looking for a place like this for a long time
  • Review By DarkHorse for Whole Hog Cafe in North Little Rock on 9/4/2008
  • 4 diners, $11-$25 per person on Sep 4 2008
  • OrderBBQ Nachos, Beef & Pork Combo platter
  • ReviewFinally BBQ place thats gets Southern BBQ right. We were impressed by the selection of 6 different BBQ sauces on every table. Order the BBQ nachos as an opportunity to sample each of them and chose your favorite. Our concensus was the number 6 - but to each his own! The Pork BBQ was absolutely the best I've had in years- next time I won't bother with the beef BBQ. Can't wait to go back.

  • Mandatory stop in Little Rock
  • Review By DarkHorse for Dixie Pig in North Little Rock on 8/11/2008
  • 5 diners, $0-$10 per person on Aug 11 2008
  • OrderBBQ sandwich, pecan pie
  • ReviewWith a name like the Dixie Pig - it better be good! Fortunately the DP delivers. I always get the PIg sandwich, classic pork BBQ with coleslaw because it is always good. Recently I also tried the pecan pie - and now make that a part of the experience too.

  • The Upscale Restaurant in Bell County
  • Review By DarkHorse for Cheeves Brothers Steak House in Temple on 8/11/2008
  • 4 diners, $26-$60 per person on Aug 10 2008
  • OrderChicken Ponchatrain, Ribeye
  • ReviewCheeves Brothers sets the pace for fine dining in Temple; valet parking, and limo service out front give you an idea what you are in for inside. The staff is impeccably trained and attentive, they will make you feel like a VIP the entire time you are there. The food is uniformly good, but at the prices - it better be. Lunch time pricing is more reasonable, but for most budgets, Cheeves Brothers is for celebrations or business dinners.

  • Upscale neighborhood Diner
  • Review By DarkHorse for Monument Cafe in Georgetown on 8/11/2008
  • 4 diners, $11-$25 per person on Aug 10 2008
  • OrderChicken Dumplings
  • ReviewFolks in Georgetown know good food, consequently this place is always crowded. Daily specials are always homemade from scratch and posted onto blackboards above the counter. The homemade pies are not to be passed up - if you are full - order one to go.
The menu is pure down home comfort and uniformly good. Recently I enjoyed the well done chicken dumpling special but was reminded about how especially good their side fruit salad is, make sure you try it.

  • Best Casual Dining in Bell County
  • Review By DarkHorse for Dead Fish Grill in Belton on 8/11/2008
  • 7 diners, $11-$25 per person on Aug 10 2008
  • OrderCatfish & Shrimp Combo, Chicken fried Venison, Fish Tacos, Fruit of the Sea Linguini
  • ReviewThe Dead Fish Grill is near Belton Dam and overlooks Belton Lake. Unbeatable scenery, relaxed atomosphere, well trained staff and great food make the Dead Fish the best casual dining experience in Bell County. Wear shorts and plan on sipping a cool drink on the deck overlooking the lake before dinner. Appetizers were worth trying, we enjoyed the calamari rings and chipotle shrimp before dinner. We found the lightly battered fried shrimp and Catfish right on target. The Fish tacos are blackened not fried and the Chicken Fried Venison was an experience worth trying. Stil haven't made it to the dessert menu, but we plan on returning frequently.

  • Solid, basic Seafood joint
  • Review By DarkHorse for Pleasure Island Seafood Restaurant in Colonial Heights on 7/22/2008
  • 4 diners, $11-$25 per person on Jul 21 2008
  • OrderSeafood Combo
  • ReviewPleasure Island is about what you'd expect from an old seafood restaurant, no nonense wait staff, plenty of fried menu items, hushpuppies and Iced tea. If this is your thing you have found a home. Platters offer a wide range of choice and large portions. Salads are basic but good. Absolutely do not pass up the hush puppies - they are the best we've had. Closed Mondays.

  • Seen Better Days
  • Review By DarkHorse for Clem Mikeska's Bar-B-Q in Temple on 7/22/2008
  • 4 diners, $11-$25 per person on Jul 21 2008
  • OrderBrisket, Chicken & Sausage
  • ReviewClem Mikeska is a celebrity in Temple, but the truth is this place is over the hill. I have repeatedly endured Clem's because the boss likes it, brings us in or has it catered. The place is tired and food is adequate because let's face it - there is no such thing as bad BBQ, but if you really want good BBQ go down to Shoepfs in Belton or Chuck's in West Temple.

  • Chuck"S Aint Fancy Just Good
  • Review By DarkHorse for Chuck's B B Q Restaurant in Temple on 7/22/2008
  • 5 diners, $0-$10 per person on Jul 21 2008
  • OrderChopped BBQ Sandwich, Catfish, Cheeseburger, Onion Rings
  • ReviewChuck"s aint fancy just good. This is a great BBQ joint with no frills decor and attitude. We come here for lunch and dinner. Come early for lunch to beat the huge business lunch crowd, evenings are more family oriented and sedate. Absolutely the best BBQ sandwich in Bell County, also order the Onion Rings for a real treat or an appetizer but don't pass them up. Likewise the Cheeseburgers are reliably thick and juicy. The Fried Catfish is a must on Friday for "all you can eat Catfish" but recommended anytime.

  • Best Cajun food in Bell County
  • Review By DarkHorse for K G's Cajun Seafood Kitchen in Harker Heights on 7/22/2008
  • 6 diners, $0-$10 per person on Jul 21 2008
  • OrderCrawfish Etouffe, Cajun Platter, Shrimp platter
  • ReviewDon't be fooled by the modest appearance and utilitarian furniture, the food here is first rate and the portions are large. Cajun entrees are hot but not overpowering - just enough to keep you coming back for more. The fried Cajun platter gives you a taste of everything and the Crawfish etouffe is exellent. Skip the coleslaw -it's the one average item on the menu. We always leave here with a take home box, so bring your appetite and bring cash because credit cards are not accepted.

  • Something for Everyone
  • Review By DarkHorse for Morrissey's Front Porch in Wolfeboro on 7/22/2008
  • 6 diners, $11-$25 per person on Jul 21 2008
  • OrderLobster stuffed haddock, Shrimp platter, Bison burger, Portobello Mushroom Burger, Grasshopper Sundae, Brownie Sundae,
  • ReviewExcellent Burgers - our vegetarian says the Portobello Mushroom was the best she's had. Also rave reviews for the Bison burger. Stuffed Haddock was good but heavy on breading. Portions were generous but not overfilling, which left room for dessert. Sundaes were fabulous, our teens appreciated the fudge on the bottom approach which allowed for "control of fudge distribution". . .

  • Classic Texas BBQ
  • Review By DarkHorse for Schoepf's Old Time Pit Bar-B-Que & Catering in Belton on 7/21/2008
  • 8 diners, $11-$25 per person on Jul 20 2008
  • OrderRibs, Pork Chops, Sausage & Chicken
  • ReviewThere's a reason Shoepf's was named to the Texas Monthly 2008 top 50 BBQ restaurants in Texas - the food! Entry to the restaurant is thru the pit - your meat comes straight from the pit to your plate. RIbs were tender, chicken was moist and the Pork Chops are thick and juicy. Be sure to order the cornbread it's first rate. Also be sure to check out the cowboy hall of fame on the walls. Weekends there is a singer belting out classic country/western tunes and requests. My out of town clients make this a mandatory stop on every visit. . .

  • 6 diners, $0-$10 per person on Jul 20 2008
  • OrderTaco plate, Chicken Tenders, Chicken Fried Steak, Quesidilla
  • ReviewGreat basic Mexican fare. Good food at a a reasonable price, super family destination. Come early for lunch weekdays, the place is usually packed with city employees, college students and the court house crowd.
