  • Loved Mackies as a kid, so took our family there. Quite disappointed. We ordered the fish and chips - and when it came, dismayed to find it was two quite small fillets ( about the size of a large cigarette lighter each) placed on top of a pile of over cooked, bland fries. What fish we did get was unseasoned and quite tasteless. I know beach side eateries are as much about the location as the food, but I could not help feeling quite dissatisfied by the small portions. Maybe they were having an off day, but I doubt we will be back.

  • Order: Fish and chips, burgers and fries.

  • Went for breakfast after seeing the great reviews and were not let down at all :). It's a typical family run diner - good food, lots of it and great people running it. Had two big breakfasts, which we each shared with one of the kids and our oldest had the ham and eggs. Food was well cooked, flavourable and abundant. A couple of minor irritants - had to chase the waitress for coffee refills ( in fairness, it was busy) and they do not take debit, so make sure you have some cash on hand.

  • Order: Eggs, ham, sausage, bacon, toast, homefries, coffee.

  • Tried the lunch buffet here twice now, and twice I liked the food, but it takes them so long to replenish anything, it really detracts from the quality. Trays sit empty for a very long time before they get refilled. It is really not worth the time and money. They need to get their kitchen staff to start cranking stuff out more consistently.

  • This is a gem of a restaurant, tucked into a strip mall. Eaten there three times now, and consistently the food is fresh, tasty, and well prepared. Some highlights - great hot and sour soup; fantastic General Tao's chicken, and fantastic chicken balls. Try the crab cheese wontons for a nice treat, as well.

  • I have been coming to Noodle Wok for 15 years, since before it was Noodle Wok and was a part of the Noodle Delight chain, in fact!

It's a good rendition on an authentic Asian noodle house....nothing fancy, just noodle dishes cooked quick and well.

My favourites are the Ho Fun with Beef, Shanghai and Shredded Pork Chow Mein noodle dishes - they never fail!

Other dishes are more hit and miss - the Singapore noodles can, depending on who is cooking, tend to be over curried, and be overwhelming as a result; the congee ( only available weekends) is generally watery and the sweet and sour chicken is pretty tasteles.

The key to good knoshing here is to stick with what they do well - any of the main noodle dishes and pass on the rest.

  • Good burgers, onion rings and fries. It's a drive in place, on a busy road, so not a lot of atmosphere but if you are looking for some good, old fashioned burgers and fries, this is one of K-W's best spots.

  • Visited on a family trip to Ottawa. Like many theme restaurants, Zak's Diner is pricey, and offers just basic quality food. Service was good - friendly and quick. Food was basic diner fare - not good but not bad and certainly not outstanding. But, be warned, you are paying for the atmosphere and the location near the Byward Market. The prices were a good 40% higher then what you would find for similar food at a regular diner. I would give it a pass, walk 3 blocks in either direction and you will find the same food, for a lot less.

  • Order: 5 kid's meals; all day breakfast; poutine

  • I posted a review of this restaurant quite a while ago - it now appears to be gone - I think I deleted when I was attempting to adjust our location in our member info section.

Anyways, I just saw Falstaff's response, and I had to laugh.

Let me see if I get this straight? I call out the restaurant for 1. not offering access to a debit machine and instead making customers who want to use electronic payment use an on site ATM, for a $2 service charge ( and this machine was out of order) and for closing service early, even after sitting our party.....

...and Falstaff's response - part of an arrogant and ill informed missive fairly dripping with 'class'-ism - is to call us morons, vagrants and razor backs, and use a reference to a 15 year old TV series as an insult to drive home his point. Uh huh. And who is out of touch?

Frankly, I have the right to be displeased that the restaurant started shelving their service before the stated closing time and that they did not provide access to a standard payment option.

If a restaurant says they will be open to a certain time, a paying customer has a right to expect that he or she will receive full value and service up until that time. If the establishment is going to offer less then full service, it seems only fair to me that they let you know and charge less then full price. Neither happened in this case.

What did happen was that almost as soon as we were seated is that many of the buffet sections were removed and had cellophane put over them.

As for the lack of access to debit...if you run a service business today how can you not offer access to debit? The restaurant has an on site ATM that customers can use to withdraw cash - at a hefty premium. If the restaurant can install an ATM, they can install a debit machine.

I am happy for Falstaff that he had the opportunity to " have owned and operated two full service restaurants both of which were consistently reviewed favourably by the media...sold these businesses back in the late 1980's for profit".

It is fortunate for both himself and the dining public that he is now out of the business.

With the condescending perspective and attitude displayed in his response, I cannot see him making it in today's competitive restaurant scene. The days of diners accepting sub-par service and accommodating the establishments that depend on them for survival, rather then the other way around, are thankfully retreating. Peer based review services, such as this web site, offer consumers a valuable forum to exchange information and perspectives. I, for one, will not go to a restaurant that does not provide what I consider a modicum of service performance - and that includes full service during the stated hours and access to - within reasonable limits - the payment service I wish to use. It's called catering to your customer, and it is what successful businesses strive to do.

I see that some of the reviews of Red Maple have been positive as to the quality of the food. I wish we had had the opportunity to find out for ourselves.

Perhaps adjusting your closing times to being what they are posted, and offering your customers access to a convenient payment option may be in order.

PS: Enjoy your retirement, Falstaff. And, please, on behalf of the dining public with our reality firmly grounded in the 21st century, stay retired. Hunkered on your overstuffed easy chair, angrily 2-finger tap typing ill-informed,abusive and nonsensical messages while muttering inanities under your breath...that's where you belong. It is not in today's hospitality field.

  • This is such a great find - a little hole in the wall place, with nothing more then a toaster oven and a couple of fridges, but they put out a great Vietnamese sub. They use fresh ingredients and a fantastic French roll. At $2.50 a sub, you cannot go wrong, Go early and try some of the homemade spring rolls ( $5 for 6) for an extra taste treat.

  • Order: Saigon Sub - bbq pork and spring rolls
