Pirate Chips

We had heard that this was a really funky place with the best fish and chips in Nanaimo. Not so. It really just misses being "funky" and is just grotty. The food was for sure the worse fish and chips I've had in Nanaimo. The girl behind the counter seemed as though she really didn't want to be there. She didn't smile - she was uncommunicative at best, but I would describe her as surly. We will definitely not go there again.

This little gem occupies what was once a newstand and while it only has a counter and a couple of tables outside it serves the best fish and chips i have ever had. The servers - also the cooks - are usually edgy but friendly young women with tattoos and nose rings...the cute blond who served me is studying to be a tattoo artist and says she has a yellow submarine tattooed on her thigh.. also love that fact the music is always great - one of the servers has a serious thing for the Beatles. The food, as i said is great, and the chips, not to overstate the point, are devine....be sure and try the garlic infused malt vinegar on the chips...The current owner is being sued by the mayor of Nanaimo for libel....and just incidentally the city forced the restaurant to remove its life size statue of legendary Nanaimo Mayor Frank Ney from the sidewalk where they claimed it was damaging the tree it was chained to ... totally bogus...
In conclusion a funky little place with loads of atmosphere, great food and friendly servers.

just dropped in for lunch...extremely friendly staff, cool atmosphere, and good food. Didn't try the deep-fried desserts, however apparently they are great as well
